If your everyday walks have become routine, consider incorporating breath work the next time you’re getting your steps in — and reap added benefits along the way. In the same way elite athletes sometimes take a concentrated breath before shooting a foul shot or nailing a finale on the balance beam, the rest of us can benefit from focusing on our breath — even when doing something as simple as walking, said Michael Fredericson, professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Stanford University and codirector of the Stanford Center on Longevity. “We know that breath is extremely important for helping you to…
Protests Are Bringing Germany To a Standstill. Will The Far-Right Take Advantage?
Farmers across Germany brought major roads to a standstill in protests throughout last week, piling misery on Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s governing coalition amid a row over subsidy cuts. The protests are expected to reach new heights on Monday. A crowd of over 10,000 and their tractors are set to descend on the capital in a rally organized in conjunction with the German freight industry. Multiple other protests are planned across the country. Now, many are warning that the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is capitalizing on the chaos for its own political gain. In the shadow of Berlin’s iconic Brandenburg Gate, a convoy of…
The five wealthiest people on Earth have become a whole lot richer in recent years. Since 2020, these billionaires’ net worth has skyrocketed 114% to a total of $869 billion, after taking inflation into account, according to Oxfam’s annual inequality report, released Sunday. If current trends continue, the world could see its first trillionaire in a decade. At the same time, nearly 5 billion people globally have become poorer, as they contend with inflation, war and the climate crisis. It would take nearly 230 years to eliminate poverty based on the current trajectory. The report, which draws on data compiled by…
The US military says it has shot down a missile fired towards one of its warships from a Houthi area of Yemen. The anti-ship cruise missile – fired towards the USS Laboon in the Red Sea – was downed off the coast of Hudaydah by a US fighter aircraft. No injuries or damage were reported in the incident on Sunday afternoon. It comes after US-UK strikes in Yemen aimed at degrading the military capability of the Houthis, who have been attacking Red Sea cargo ships. The US and UK hit nearly 30 locations in Yemen on Friday, reportedly including arms…
Bilateral ties between the Maldives and India – that have hit rock-bottom in recent weeks – have taken another tumble after Male formally asked Delhi to withdraw its troops from the island nation by 15 March. The demand was conveyed at the first meeting of a high-level core group between the two sides held on Sunday in the Maldivian capital of Male. “Indian military personnel cannot stay in the Maldives. That’s the policy of this administration,” Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, the public policy secretary in President Mohamed Muizzu’s office, said. There are about 80 Indian troops in the Maldives – Delhi…
Just a week ago, the expectation about the latest gathering of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, was of a line being drawn under three years of pandemic, lockdown and Ukraine war energy shocks. Inflation is falling, and 2024 was set to be the year that central banks start cutting interest rates, including here in the UK. In three years of different rolling, merging global crises, the world economy has been in the shadow of massive geopolitical shifts. The events of the past few days shows that the “polycrisis” is far from over. Perhaps the most telling development has…
Zayn Malik’s collaboration with popular Pakistani band Aur has given fans much to celebrate – with many psyched that the British singer is fluent in Urdu. A remake of Aur’s breakout hit Tu Hai Kahan features the ex-One Direction singer providing vocals in Urdu. The original version of the song has more than 95m views though the remake, released last Friday, is fast catching up, with 3m views. Malik said he was “incredibly humbled” when Aur reached out to him. “I love the song and have brought some of myself to it. I hope people love what we’ve done,” he…
It was a beautiful day for a summer cycle through East Lothian. The sort of day where nothing could go wrong. Until it did. I was moving fast down a steep hill heading towards the village of Gifford for breakfast when I took a tumble. The road surface was broken and I clipped a rough edge and skidded. There was a split second of clarity. I could see exactly what was about to happen and that I was powerless to prevent it. The bike went one way and I went the other. I fell hard, bounced and rolled across the…
Six people have been arrested on suspicion of a plot to disrupt the London Stock Exchange. The Met Police said information suggested activists from the Palestine Action group were intending to target the exchange on Monday. The force said it was believed those involved were planning to cause damage and “lock on” in an effort to stop the building opening for trading. Arrests were made in London, Liverpool and Brighton on Sunday. All six people are currently in custody. The Met said it was “mindful of the suggestion that this was one part of a planned week of action”. It…
An elderly Israeli woman and her son have been killed in a Hezbollah missile attack from Lebanon, Israel says. The anti-tank missile hit the town of Kfar Yuval on Israel’s northern border, killing Barak Ayalon, 45, and his mother Miri Ayalon, 76. Earlier the Israeli military said it killed four gunmen trying to cross from Lebanon into Israel. It comes as Hamas health officials in Gaza said 125 more people had been killed in continuing Israeli strikes. That brings the number of deaths in Gaza since Israel began retaliatory attacks on the Strip to nearly 24,000, with thousands more believed…
