The US Food and Drug Administration said Thursday that a preliminary evaluation of reports of suicidal thoughts or actions among people taking drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy for type 2 diabetes and weight loss has not found evidence that the drugs cause those effects. The agency said in a statement that it conducted “detailed reviews” over the last several months of reports received in its FDA Adverse Event Reporting System, or FAERS. It noted that because “the information was often limited and because these events can be influenced by other factors, we determined that the information in these reports did not demonstrate…

A class action lawsuit was filed on Thursday in Washington state against Boeing on behalf of the passengers aboard last week’s Alaska Airlines flight 1282. According to the lawsuit’s allegations, “the event physically injured some passengers and emotionally traumatized most if not all aboard. The violence of the event bruised the bodies of some” and “passengers were shocked, terrorized and confused, thrust into a waking nightmare, hoping they would live long enough to walk the earth again.” Alaska Airlines flight 1282, which was headed from Portland to Ontario, California, last Friday, returned safely to Portland International Airport after the door…

China’s full-year exports fell for the first time since 2016 as global demand slowed. In 2022, Chinese exports increased by 7% from the year earlier. The last time China registered a decline in overseas shipments was in 2016, when exports fell 7.7% in the face of weak demand. Last year, imports fell 5.5% to $2.56 trillion. That left the world’s second largest economy with a trade surplus of $823 billion. “The global economic recovery…

FKA twigs has responded after a Calvin Klein advert was banned for presenting her as a “stereotypical sexual object”. A UK regulator found the poster – featuring the singer just wearing a denim shirt – was likely to cause serious offence by objectifying women. Writing on Instagram, she suggested the ban – which came after a campaign starring actor Jeremy Allen White went viral – showed “double standards”. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) said its ruling was clear. In the advert, FKA was wearing a denim shirt drawn halfway around her body, showing the side of her buttocks and half of…

Actors often trawl some of their deepest emotions for a role, but David Oyelowo’s latest film was particularly painful because it meant revisiting his grief after losing both parents. The Golden Globe-nominated star said he felt “fear and trepidation” when he was asked to star in short film The After. “I knew it would require cracking open my heart and just letting the world in somehow,” he tells the BBC. But his fear was “the reason I eventually felt I had to do it”, he says. The After follows Dayo, played by Oyelowo, who goes through an unexpected, catastrophic and…

Oil prices have risen after Iran seized a tanker off the coast of Oman, raising concerns fuel prices could increase. The oil tanker was heading for Turkey on Thursday when armed men ordered it to sail to an Iranian port. The price of Brent crude oil jumped by more than 2%, to $78.40 a barrel following the incident. Meanwhile, the UK government has modelled scenarios suggesting the disruption in the Red Sea could further shrink the British economy. The BBC understands the Treasury has considered a rise of at least $10 (around £7.83) per barrel in the international price of…

Consumer prices in the US rose again in December, driven by higher costs for housing, dining out and car insurance. Inflation – which measures the rate at which prices are increasing – hit 3.4% over the year, the Labor Department said. It was up from 3.1% in November, accelerating more over the month than many analysts had expected. The figure is likely to keep the US central bank cautious about declaring victory in its fight against inflation. The US Federal Reserve has an inflation target of 2% and, until last summer, had been raising interest rates to cool price rises.…

Drone and rocket attacks on cargo ships in the Red Sea have now prompted US and UK-led forces to stage air strikes on targets in the region. Western forces took action after vessels were attacked by the Houthis – an Iran-backed rebel group which controls a large part of Yemen. US President Joe Biden said the US and UK military had successfully launched strikes early on Friday against Houthi targets with support from Australia, Bahrain, Canada and the Netherlands. More than 12 sites, including in the capital, Sanaa, and Hudaydah, the Houthi Red Sea port stronghold, were hit. The Houthi…

The families of the two Palestinian journalists killed in an Israeli air strike in Gaza have rejected as “fabricated” and “false” a new claim from Israel’s military that they were “terrorists”. The Qatar-based Al Jazeera news network, for whom one of the journalists worked, also condemned what it called the “false and misleading attempts to justify the killing of our colleagues”. Hamza al-Dahdouh, an Al Jazeera journalist and cameraman, and Mustafa Thuraya, a freelance videographer, died after their car was hit in the southern city of Rafah on Sunday. A third journalist was reportedly seriously injured. Al Jazeera said at…

Gradually, and with trepidation, life in Guayaquil is beginning to return. Few residents have fully recovered from the shock – from the outright chaos and bloodshed – of this week, a moment which will live long in the city’s collective memory. But Dina Moreno can’t afford to stay home any longer. She sells mobile phone accessories at Guayaquil’s biggest covered market and, like many of her fellow stallholders, has ventured out to open her business and get back to work. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” she recalls with a shudder. “When we saw what was happening at the TV…
