Analysing the entire genetic code of cancer patients can help deliver treatments that work better for the individual, experts have found. In the biggest study of its kind, with 13,000 cancer patients in England, combining clinical data and DNA evidence meant care could be tailored. Based on the results, some were given different drugs or avoided ones likely to cause them side effects. Most brain tumours had genetics that affected treatment decisions. In the study, published in Nature Medicine, more than nine out of every 10 brain tumours and most bowel and lung cancers exhibited genetic changes that could guide…
Hundreds wrongly convicted in the Post Office scandal could have their names cleared this year, after emergency laws were announced to “swiftly exonerate and compensate victims”. Post Office Minister Kevin Hollinrake said they had been victims of a “brutal and arbitrary exercise of power”. He added that £1bn had been budgeted for compensation payments. There were more than 900 convictions linked to the scandal over 16 years, with only 93 so far being overturned. Between 1999 and 2015, the Post Office prosecuted hundreds of sub-postmasters and mistresses after a faulty computer system called Horizon made it look like money was…
Incorporating more exercise into your life is one of the keys to better health, so it’s understandable that many people resolve every January to do just that. Yet, unfortunately, it’s a commonly failed resolution. Most people cite a lack of time for their lack of keeping up with daily exercise, but in my experience as a strength and mobility coach, I find it stems more from a lack of understanding how to best incorporate exercise into your everyday life. Not everyone’s lifestyle can accommodate adding an hour at the gym every day. But everyone has the capacity to add some level of…
A warning to Swedes from two top defence officials to prepare for war has prompted concern and accusations of alarmism. Civil Defence Minister Carl-Oskar Bohlin told a defence conference “there could be war in Sweden”. His message was then backed up by military commander-in-chief Gen Micael Byden, who said all Swedes should prepare mentally for the possibility. However, opposition politicians have objected to the tone of the warnings. Ex-prime minister Magdalena Andersson told Swedish TV that while the security situation was serious, “it is not as if war is just outside the door.” Children’s rights organisation Bris said that its…
Aaron Rodgers Is Off ESPN’s ‘Pat McAfee Show’ For The Season After Ugly Remarks About Jimmy Kimmel, Conspiracy Theories
Aaron Rodgers is done as a guest on Pat McAfee’s ESPN show for the remainder of the NFL season. McAfee, who has drawn significant scrutiny for allowing the injured New York Jets quarterback to appear on his program and deliver lengthy conspiratorial rants, made the announcement Wednesday on his show. “So ‘Aaron Rodgers Tuesday,’ season four, is done,” McAfee told his audience. “There could be a lot of people that are happy with that. Myself included, to be honest with you. The way it ended, it got real loud.” A person familiar with the matter told CNN that the decision…
Why are diseases more common in some parts of Europe than others, and why are northern Europeans taller than their southern counterparts? An international team of scientists say they have unearthed the answer in the DNA of ancient teeth and bones. The genes which protected our ancestors from animal diseases now raise the risk of multiple sclerosis (MS). The researchers call their discovery “a quantum leap” in understanding the evolution of the disease. And they say it could change opinions on what causes MS, and have an impact on the way it is treated. Why look at MS? There are…
Prominent voice actors say they weren’t told about a landmark deal setting out how voices generated by artificial intelligence (AI) can be used in games. It has been struck by US actors’ union Sag-Aftra and AI firm Replica Studios. The union says it guarantees “fully informed consent and fair compensation” for its members. But many voice artists, who have long been concerned AI will replace them, have reacted with fury with one calling the deal “garbage.” It comes after Sag-Aftra led a months-long strike in 2023 to fight for protections from film and television studios using AI. Many voice actors have suggested…
At least eight people have died after major rioting and unrest hit Papua New Guinea’s capital, Port Moresby. Shops and cars were set on fire and supermarkets looted after police went on strike over a pay dispute. Hundreds had taken to the streets on Wednesday. In the aftermath, Prime Minister James Marape addressed the nation saying lawlessness would not be tolerated. “Breaking the law does not achieve certain outcomes,” he told the public on Thursday. The army has been deployed to restore order and while most of the the riots had died down by Wednesday night, Mr Marape acknowledged: “It’s…
Sandeep Lamichhane: Nepal Spinner Handed Eight-Year Jail Sentence After Being Found Guilty Of Rape
Nepal spinner Sandeep Lamichhane has been sentenced to eight years in prison for raping an 18-year-old woman. Lamichhane, who is not in custody, was not present when the sentence was handed down at a court in the Nepalese capital Kathmandu on Wednesday. The 23-year-old – Nepal’s most high-profile cricketer – was found guilty of the offence last month. Lamichhane’s lawyer Saroj Ghimire told Reuters he intends to appeal against the verdict in a “higher court”. “We are not convinced about the decision of the court,” said Ghimire. “The court has whimsically declared Sandeep to be a convict. Sandeep will go to the…
An Austro-German heiress is setting up a citizens group to decide how she should give away much of the fortune she inherited from her grandmother. Marlene Engelhorn, who is 31 and lives in Vienna, wants 50 Austrians to determine how €25m (£21.5m) of her inheritance should be redistributed. “I have inherited a fortune, and therefore power, without having done anything for it,” she said. “And the state doesn’t even want taxes on it.” Austria abolished inheritance tax in 2008, one of a handful of European countries that do not impose inheritance tax – or death duties. Ms Engelhorn believes that…
