Fujitsu should be paying compensation to sub-postmasters wrongly convicted for theft, says Sally Stringer one of the victims of the Post Office scandal. She is angry the Japanese-owned company, which developed the software at the heart of the affair, is still winning government contracts 20 years after the problems first arose. Fujitsu said it was sorry for its role in sub-postmasters’ suffering. But there is a growing chorus calling for action over the firm’s role. No-one from Fujitsu has been held to account for failures with Horizon, the software it supplied to the Post Office. The firm has not paid…
Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has dropped out of the presidential race with a parting shot at frontrunner Donald Trump. “I am going to make sure that in no way do I enable Donald Trump to ever be president of the United States again,” the Trump ally-turned-critic said. The Republican had faced pressure to step aside and allow the party to unify around a viable challenger to Mr Trump. He did not endorse anyone as he bowed out of the race. But on a hot mic moments before he announced he was ending his bid, Mr Christie predicted that…
Shanshan had never met anyone from Taiwan before January last year. The 24-year-old, from Changsha City in central China, had also not really paid much attention to news about the self-governing island, which her country believes is Chinese territory and has promised to take one day. But then she fell in love – she met her Taiwanese boyfriend playing online video games. They started chatting for hours, long talks during which she discovered he was “gentle and sensitive”. But even as Shanshan and her partner Guodong share sweet messages across the Taiwan Strait – preparing to meet her parents during…
NBA Round-Up: Desmond Bane Leads Injury-Hit Memphis Grizzlies To Win Over Dallas Mavericks
Desmond Bane scored 32 points to help the injury-hit Memphis Grizzlies beat the Dallas Mavericks 120-103. The Grizzlies went into the game without seven players including star guard Ja Morant, who will miss the rest of the season with a shoulder injury. That became eight when Marcus Smart was forced off with a dislocated finger, but Memphis held on for the win. Elsewhere, Anthony Davis scored 41 points to help the Los Angeles Lakers edge the Toronto Raptors 132-131. The lead changed hands 23 times in a thrilling encounter, but Davis scored 20 points in a decisive final quarter to help the Lakers overturn…
Skepta has apologised and taken down the artwork for his new single Gas Me Up (Diligent), following allegations that it referenced the Holocaust. The image showed a group of men with shaved heads. One had the words “Gas Me Up” tattooed across his head. People quickly drew parallels between the photograph and the deaths of Jewish people in Nazi gas chambers during World War Two. Skepta later apologised and acknowledged the potential for offence. “I’ve been waiting to drop Gas Me Up (Diligent) since teasing it April last year, worked hard getting the artwork right for my album rollout which…
Pat McAfee’s Repeated Airing Of Conspiracy Theories On ESPN Presents a Headache For Disney Boss Bob Iger
Where are Bob Iger and Jimmy Pitaro? The Disney and ESPN chiefs have both been conspicuously silent as sports shock jock Pat McAfee very publicly uses their air to host a weekly conspiracy program with injured New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers — an off-the-rails affair that recently tarred and feathered Jimmy Kimmel within the Magic Kingdom’s own walls. Neither Iger nor Pitaro said a word Tuesday as Rodgers made his way back to ESPN’s air, using his regular appearance on the Disney-owned channel to go on an extended — and, at times, fact-free — rant on a range of topics unrelated to sports. Rodgers, who McAfee handsomely pays to appear on the show once a week, spread medical misinformation, he assailed the…
German Rail Strikes And Farmers’ Protests Cause Disruption In Europe’s Biggest Economy
German commuters faced chaos on Wednesday as the country was hit with a three-day national rail strike, adding to travel disruption in Europe’s biggest economy where protesting farmers continued to block roads and highways. Both cargo and passenger trains were affected by the rail strike which led the main rail operator Deutsche Bahn (DB) to cancel thousands of trains, a press statement by DB said Wednesday. DB said that some 80% of long-distance services will be canceled, while regional lines will be affected to varying extents. During the strike which will last until Friday, rail services will run on a heavily reduced emergency timetable.…
Crypto advocates gunning for approval for bitcoin ETFs by the Securities and Exchange Commission got a false alarm on Tuesday afternoon. The SEC’s X account posted a message saying the regulator had approved them, but SEC Chair Gary Gensler quickly published a message on his own X feed indicating the agency’s account had been hacked. “The @SECGov twitter account was compromised, and an unauthorized tweet was posted. The SEC has not approved the listing and trading of spot bitcoin exchange-traded products.” The SEC soon after posted a similar message on its account. Later, a spokesperson for the regulatory agency sent out the following…
UK and US naval forces have repelled the largest attack yet by Yemen’s Houthi rebels on shipping in the Red Sea, the UK defence secretary says. The Iran-backed group launched at least 21 drones and missiles overnight, according to the US military. They were shot down by carrier-based jets and four warships, it added. No injuries or damage were reported. The Houthis have not commented, but they have targeted vessels in response to the war in the Gaza Strip. They have claimed – often falsely – that the ships were linked to Israel. The US military’s Central Command said Tuesday’s…
