North Korea has dropped 90 balloons carrying propaganda leaflets and rubbish on two border provinces in the South, prompting authorities to warn its residents to stay indoors. South Korea’s military also cautioned the public on Wednesday against touching the white balloons and the plastic bags attached to them because they contain “filthy waste and trash”. The balloons found in Gyeonggi and Gangwon provinces are now being analysed by relevant authorities. North and South Korea have both used balloons in their propaganda campaigns since the Korean War in the 1950s. The recent incident comes days after North Korea said it would…
As India votes to elect a new government, all eyes are on the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, commonly known by its initials UP. Spread over an area roughly the size of Britain, the state packs in nearly four times as many people. With an estimated 257 million people, it is India’s most populous state and would be the fifth largest in the world if it was an independent country after India, China, United States and Indonesia and ahead of Pakistan or Brazil. The state is among just three in India which are voting in all seven phases in the…
The US does not believe Israel has launched a full-scale invasion of Rafah in southern Gaza, White House spokesman John Kirby has said. He spoke hours after Israeli forces reached the centre of the city and reportedly seized a strategically important hill overlooking the nearby border with Egypt. US President Joe Biden said this month he would limit weapons supplies to Israel if it entered the “population centres” of Rafah, where hundreds of thousands of civilians are still believed to be sheltering. Mr Kirby was also questioned about an Israeli strike and a resulting fire that killed at least 45…

A woman with mobility issues was left shocked when Coldplay front-man Chris Martin offered her a lift at Radio 1’s Big Weekend. Saundra Glenn, 64, who has osteoarthritis and “a dodgy right hip”, was walking towards the accessibility box office when she stopped to rest against a fence. A black Mercedes pulled up alongside her and a lady inside asked her to get inside so they could give her a lift. “The door opens and I said, ‘oh that’s Chris Martin, I can’t get in with him’ and they said ‘yes you can’.” Before the car arrived she had considered…
A gaming museum has 3D-printed a replica of an historic arcade machine, Computer Space. The Arcade Museum in Stroud, Gloucestershire, was missing the first commercially-available arcade video game. They worked with the company Heber to make an authentic replica. Neil Thomas, the curator at the Arcade Museum said because it was a replica, and not an original, they were not “scared” to let people play it. Although the original was not commercially successful due to “intimidating controls and gameplay”, a museum spokesperson said, it is now very rare and expensive, with auction prices exceeding £55,000. The team went so far…
If you’ve flown this weekend or are hopping on a flight today, it’s likely you’re making history. Passenger traffic at US airports is on pace to make this Memorial Day weekend the busiest on record, according to Transportation Security Administration screening data. Following record-setting traveler data for Friday (2.951 million, No. 1 screening day in TSA history) and Thursday (2.897 million, No. 3 ever), more than 2.4 million people passed through TSA checkpoints on each day this weekend. What’s amounting to be a blockbuster Memorial Day weekend could be a precursor to a chart-busting summer of travel. It’s also amounting to a frustrating weekend…
China is doubling down on its plan to dominate advanced technologies of the future by setting up its largest-ever semiconductor state investment fund, according to information posted by a government-run agency.
